Myanmar draft dodger captured after fleeing police

A MYANMAR man who faces mandatory military service should he be sent back from Thailand pulled a ruse to flee police detention in northern Lamphun province but was finally caught, TV Channel 7 said today (Sep. 8).

Mr. Thepo, 38, who was arrested for illegal entry, swallowed some shampoo and detergent to start foaming in the mouth. He was then taken to the hospital for treatment.

However later, after recovering, he was brought back to Northern Industrial Estate police station but managed to escape.

Police and volunteers who hunted for him all night and throughout this morning but did not find him finally managed to capture him at around noon after a village headman saw him in a rice field.

He told police he did not want to return to Myanmar as he was fearful of getting killed in the battlefield as he faced two years of compulsory military service under a conscription law that was activated in February this year.

Meanwhile in southern Ranong province, soldiers from Thep Satri task force and a team of policemen from Suk Samran station chased two vehicles that zoomed off from an ambush point .

Upon catching up and halting the vehicles they found six Myanmar migrant workers in one of them and seven in the other.

All were arrested for illegal entry.
