Scam alert: Don’t answer calls with three prefixes

POLICE warned the public to not answer calls with three prefixes, that is +697 +698 and +66, as they are definitely from scammers and dangerous, Sanook.com said today (Sept. 2),

The Thai police and related agencies have strictly suppressed and cut off communication channels of call centre gangs and now they can no longer use SIM boxes and have reverted to using their old tactic of making overseas calls,  but these show +697 +698 prefixes.

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission has assigned the prefix +697 to voice calls over internet protocol from overseas. Meanwhile calls with +698 prefix are from Thai mobile phone registered numbers but the callers are using a roaming service to connect from overseas.

The crackdown has led to a flood of complaints with the police continuously intercepting and suppressing these criminals.

“If you accidentally answer a call from a number like this, do not give any information. #Don’t believe, don’t be in a hurry and don’t transfer, with good wishes from the police,” the announcement said.

Those who have been reached by scammers can file a complaint at http://www.thaipoliceonline.go.th
