New Pheu Thai-led govt not starting to work until mid-September

By Thai Newsroom Reporters

A NEW PHEU THAI-LED government will not start to work until around the middle of September, said acting Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai today (Aug. 31).

All 36 ministers-designate from varied coalition partners, including Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, daughter of de facto Pheu Thai boss Thaksin Shinawatra, are being individually, thoroughly screened and double-checked by the Secretariat of the Cabinet and Council of State before being forwarded to the monarch for formal appointment whilst the whole process might roughly take a couple of weeks before the new Pheu Thai-led government could start to run the country, according to the acting deputy prime minister.

The new cabinet of ministers headed by the woman prime minister will be traditionally obliged to attend ceremonies featuring an audience with His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn, a formal appointment by the monarch and an oath-taking ritual before the monarch prior to a formal declaration of their government policies at parliament.

Phumtham, who was named deputy prime minister-cum-defence minister in the Paetongtarn I cabinet, made his comment after the latest cabinet lineup had been finished with an historic entry of the otherwise archenemies, namely the Democrats, onto the Pheu Thai bandwagon.

He reconfirmed that a Pheu Thai flagship policy for the much-heralded, yet-delayed 10,000-baht digital wallet for an estimated 45 million people aged 16 years and over will be carried out as planned, among other economic recovery schemes.

The new government under Paetongtarn is replacing that of her predecessor Srettha Thavisin who was stripped of his prime-ministerial status by the Constitutional Court on grounds of a severe breach to the wide-ranging code of political ethics.
