Tunnel search ends with all three workers found dead

 

ALL three workers trapped in a collapsed tunnel, which is part of  the Bangkok-Nakhon Ratchasima section of the Sino-Thai high speed train project, died there with the bodies of the two Chinese workers found today (Aug. 30) after their Myanmar colleague’s body was brought out yesterday and have been taken for autopsy, TV Channel 7 said.

Acting deputy prime minister-cum-interior minister Anutin Charnvirakul said as the bodies of all three workers trapped in this tunnel since 11.40 p.m. last Saturday (Aug. 24) had been found the construction site, in Chanthuek subdistrict, Pak Chong district in Nakhon Ratchasima province, will now been handed over the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) and the contractor.

“All of them have been medically confirmed to have died. The official result will be issued by Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital which is performing the autopsy. But initially it has been reported that the first deceased person had died of suffocation with the official results of the other two expected in two to three hours,” Anutin said.

Regarding assistance for the families of the three workers, the director-general of the Department of Labour Protection and Welfare personally came to the site to take care of the matter. Their work history will be checked so that the  Social Security Office and SRT’s contractor provide assistance according to the law.

The rescue operation lasted approximately five days starting from Aug. 24 for a total of almost 130 hours. It was carried out in strict accordance with international assistance standards.
