THE construction company building a tunnel in the Bangkok-Nakhon Ratchasima section of the Sino-Thai high speed train project that collapsed late Saturday night (Aug. 23) trapping three workers has not lost hope of rescuing them and is still removing debris to reach them, TV Channel 7 said late last night (Aug. 25).
This tunnel collapsed at Chanthuek subdistrict, Pak Chong district, with a Chinese supervisor, a Chinese backhoe operator and a Myanmar truck driver trapped two kilometres from the entrance.
All day long the Chinese contractor dug as much debris and soil as possible to reach the three workers in a race against time to save their lives. Large air blowers were installed to fan oxygen from outside into the collapsed tunnel continuously.
In the latest development, an Urban Search and Rescue (USAR Thailand) team has joined the rescue operation.
Earlier Pak Chong district chief together with other officials and police went to investigate the scene of the accident but were not allowed to enter by the Chinese construction engineer because he feared for their safety.
