A RUSSIAN man overstaying in Thailand was arrested today (Aug. 27) after police found some fake euro notes in his possession at a hotel in Chonburi, Naewna newspaper said.
Police tracked down the Russian man, Mr. A (pseudonym), 29, after a Thai man went to a currency exchange booth and tried to exchange 500 euros for Thai baht. However the staffer used a chemical pen to check its authenticity and upon finding that the banknote was fake handed it back to him and alerted the authorities.
Police then rounded up the unidentified Thai man who turned out to be a receptionist at a hotel in Phra Tamnak area and said a Russian guest who had stayed there for three weeks without paying had given him this banknote to settle the bill.
He then took police to the room where the Russian man was staying and they found that he had six 500 euro notes and eighty 50 euro notes with him – all of them fake.
The overstaying suspect admitted to having brought counterfeit banknotes to Thailand with his friend in Istanbul having given them to him to spend here.
