ACTING on a complaint by a Canadian tourist that two Ugandan women had stolen almost 100,000 baht from his hotel room safe after he had invited them over, police arrested them last night (June 17) but they denied the charge, TV Channel 7 said this morning.
Policemen from Bang Lamung station and Immigration Division 3 arrested Mrs. Mariam, 38, and Mrs. Sheba, 28, at a hotel in Khao Phra Tamnak area, South Pattaya, after getting a warrant from Pattaya Provincial Court on a charge of jointly committing robbery at night.
The Canadian man, only identified as Mr. Khalid, told police that on June 10 while drinking at Walking Street he invited the two African women to come and drink and sleep with him at his hotel room in Naklua area and offered to pay them 2,000 baht each.
However he lost consciousness and fell asleep but upon waking up he found that approximately 90,000 baht in both Thai and foreign currency which he had placed in the safe was missing and was convinced the two women had stolen it.
After getting an arrest warrant, police found out that the two African women were hiding in a hotel in the Khao Phra Tamnak area and arrested them there. They were able to seize some key evidence such as the clothes and wigs they wore that night.
The two suspects denied the charge, maintaining that they were not sex workers as claimed by the victim, who they said was very drunk that night and had hired them to give him a relaxing massage.
However police do not believe the two women because they had gathered evidence, including CCTV footage as well as other items, and could definitely link them to the theft.
They have been detained and will be prosecuted according to the law.
