SOME of the current and former leaders attending the Asian Leadership Conference (ALC) being held in South Korea today (May 22) questioned former Move Forward leader Pita Limjaroenrat about the Thai judicial system, Thai Rath newspaper said.
ALC is hosted annually by Chosunilbo, South Korea’s largest daily news media, with global leaders discussing and sharing solutions for issues that Asia and the world are facing. This year’s theme is “The Era of Hyper-Uncertainty; Innovative Leadership for the New Future.”
Pita shared his views on various global issues including the political situation in Thailand with today being the 10th anniversary of the 2014 coup d’état staged by former army chief-turned-prime minister/de facto Ruam Thai Sang Chart boss/privy councillor Prayut Chan-o-cha to overthrow an elected government under the then-premier Yingluck Shinawatra.
After that some of the global leaders then questioned him about the Thai judicial process for political dissenters, particularly young political activists held in pre-trial detention who have gone on hunger strike to demand bail.
Earlier this month Thai woman activist Netiporn “Bung” Sanesangkhom, 27, died after 110 days of hunger strike to protest her having been denied bail.
She is among 41 others who had been charged with the lese majeste law and denied bail against the world-recognised basis of presumption of innocence for defendants prior to court rulings.
Three of those political detainees including the 22-year-old Tantawan “Tawan” Tuatulanond are reportedly sustaining their hunger strike in protest of their being denied bail.
Among the current and former leaders attending this conference are Yoon Suk Yoel, president of South Korea, Ms. Jacinda Ardern, former prime minister of New Zealand, Ms.Sanna Marin, former prime minister of Finland, Mr. Mike Pompeo, former US secretary of state, Mr. Kevin McCarthy former speaker of US House of Representatives, Mr.Rahm Emanuel, former White House chief of staff under President Barack Obama and current ambassador to Japan, Mr. Ron Klain, former White House chief of staff under US President Joe Biden and Khairy Jamaluddin, Malaysia’s former minister of public health.
