AMBASSADORS OF WORLD democracies based in Bangkok have expressed condolences for yesterday’s tragic death of Thai woman activist Netiporn “Bung” Sanesangkhom due to her hunger strike during detention.
The envoys of world democracies included the United States’ Ambassador Robert F. Godec, the United Kingdom’s Ambassador Mark Gooding, Germany’s Ambassador Ernst Reichel, Sweden’s Ambassador Anna Hammargren, Denmark’s Ambassador Jon Thorgaard and the European Union’s Ambassador David Daly, among others.
“We are saddened by the tragic death of Netiporn ‘Bung’ Sanesangkhom. We send our deepest condolences to her family and friends,” reads the US ambassador’s message posted online.
“Very sad to hear about the passing of ‘Bung’ Netiporn today. Our thoughts are with her loved ones,” says the UK ambassador’s note.
“The tragic death of a young political activist in pre-trial detention without bail, after a prolonged hunger strike. My condolences go out to her family and friends. My wish would be that political disagreements are not taken to such bitter and extreme consequences,” reads the German ambassador’s message posted online.
The 27-year-old woman detainee who had been charged with violating the draconian lese majeste law, also known as Section 112 of the Criminal Code, was yesterday pronounced dead at Thammasat Chalerm Phrakiat hospital after she had been rushed from a hospital in the premises of a Bangkok prison.
The woman detainee who had staged the fatal hunger strike in protest of her having been denied bail since the last 110 days was among 41 others who had been charged with the lese majeste law and denied bail against the world-recognised basis of presumption of innocence for defendants prior to court rulings.
Three of those political detainees including the 22-year-old Tantawan “Tawan” Tuatulanond are reportedly sustaining their hunger strike in protest of their being denied bail.
In 2022, Netiporn was arrested alongside eight others on lese majeste charges whilst conducting an opinion poll on royal motorcades in relation to Bangkok’s road traffic conditions in Siam Paragon area of Pathumwan district of the Thai capital.
