British BASE jumper dies in condo plunge after parachute fails to open

A BRITISH BASE jumper died after his parachute failed to open upon leaping from the 29th floor of a Pattaya condominium with his plunge to death at 7.30 p.m. yesterday filmed by a friend waiting for him on the ground floor, Naewna newspaper said today (Jan. 28).

The body of the British daredevil, Mr. Nathy Odinson, 33, who Mail Online said comes from Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, was found by police and rescuers near the exit of Building B of the condominium complex at Na Kluea subdistrict, Bang Lamung district, Chonburi, with his blue parachute next to him.

“BASE” is an acronym that stands for four categories of fixed objects from which one can jump: buildings, antennae (referring to radio masts), spans (bridges), and earth (cliffs), according to Wikipedia.

Security guard Mr. Kanet Chansong, 33, said he heard the sound of something falling and thought it was a branch that had broken and hit the ground. Moments later a woman passing by screamed and when he turned to have a look and saw the dead British man he quickly called the police.

The deceased man had sneaked into the condo after parking his vehicle outside the compound and when nobody was around went up to the top floor and jumped with this friend filming his daring leap on the ground floor likely to make content, he said.

Odison had hit a tree before landing on the ground, the security guard said, adding he had jumped down this building several times before.

Pol. Lt. Kamolporn Nadee, a deputy inspector at Bang Lamung police station, said there were no signs of assault with the deceased friend’s video clip showing him jumping from the 29th floor but his parachute failed to open and he then hit the ground and died.
