Police investigating death of toddler found stuffed in fridge

NONTHABURI police questioned the adoptive mother of a two-year-old boy found dead after being wrapped in a blanket then put in a cloth bag and stuffed in a refrigerator with the grandmother having alerted them, Naewna newspaper and Amarin TV said this morning (Jan. 6).

The toddler, nicknamed Nong Nai, was found dead in a plugged fridge within a bedroom of a two-storey house on Rattanathibet road, Bang Rak Phatthana subdistrict, Bang Bua Thong district, Nonthaburi province.

Police said there were many bruises on his arms and legs and bite marks and he had been dead for around three days now.

Aside from the dead boy, there are four residents in this house, the grandmother Mrs. Yupa, her husband, their son, only identified as Bank, and his wife, Ms. Marisa Thongiam, or Koi, 26, who is being questioned.

Police were told that Bank had adopted the boy who was the son of his friends who were addicted to drugs but it is uncertain whether they are in prison.

Pol. Col. Pruet Chamrunsat, superintendent of Bang Bua Thong police station, said Yupa had called them about the missing boy who she believed was still in the house with her son’s bedroom being locked. When police arrived and broke down the bedroom door they found the boy dead in the fridge.

Marisa told police that on the day the boy died she had given him some milk to drink and put him to sleep then drove to visit her mother.

Upon returning at 6 p.m. she saw the boy walking around then wrapped himself in his blanket and went to sleep again. However late that night when she removed the blanket to change his nappy, she was shocked to see that there were ants all over his face and that he had sticky rice in his hand with some in his mouth.

She called her husband Bank and when he arrived he shook the toddler to revive him and then said he died after choking on the sticky rice.

As they were too scared to call a doctor, Bank wrapped the boy in his blanket, put him in a cloth bag then placed him in the fridge.

She added that Bank had gone out to see some friends and would be back this evening.

However police were not convinced that the boy choked on the sticky rice and will be conducting a thorough investigation. His body has been sent to the institute of Forensic Science for an autopsy to determine the true cause of death
