THE Supreme Court today (May 20) sentenced rock star Seksan Sukphimai, whose stage name is Sek Loso, to two years, 12 months and 20 days in jail for threatening police with a pistol and drug abuse and was immediately taken to Min Buri special prison, Amarin TV said.
He had been arrested on December 31, 2017 at his residence in Bangkok after Nakhon Si Thammarat Provincial Court issued an arrest warrant on a charge of firing a pistol in the air without just cause. During the arrest, Sek Loso resisted and threatened to use pistol if the officers stormed in. Police called for reinforcement and controlled him.
The prosecutor had charged him with possessing an unregistered automatic pistol and ammunition and using it to resist and obstruct police officers in performing their duties and consuming a Category I narcotic.
In passing the judgement the Supreme Court said the defendant, who admitted to possessing a pistol but denied other charges, had committed the same offence again.
The court of first instance had on October 25, 2018 found the defendant guilty of all three charges and sentenced him to one year in jail under the Firearms Act, reduced to six months after confessing; one year and six months in jail for obstructing officers on duty by threatening to harm them with a pistol; and six months in jail for drug use. The sentence totalled one year and 18 months in jail.
The court added another one year and three months in jail in another case of assaulting his ex-wife’s close friend, taking the total to two years and 21 months in prison without parole.
Although the defendant claimed to be suffering from bipolar disorder at the time of the offence, the court found that the defendant knew right from wrong.
However, The Appeals Court changed the ruling jailing him for five months for possessing a pistol, with this reduced to three months; when combined with other penalties of the court of first instance, he was jailed for two years and 18 months without parole but released on 600,000-baht bail.
Sek Loso is both a songwriter and musician and gained nationwide fame as the founder, lead vocalist, pianist and rhythm guitarist of Loso, which became one of the most successful rock bands in Thai music history. His music bridges the gap between Western rock influences and Thai cultural sensibilities, making him a household name in Southeast Asia, according to Wikipedia.
