By Thai Newsroom Reporters

A COMBINED 409 MILLION BAHT worth of wealth owned by Senator Upakit Pachareeyangkun was today (Nov.30) impounded by the Office of the Narcotics Control Board amidst drug trafficking and money laundering charges earlier filed against him.

Acting ONCB secretary-general Panurat Lakbun led a team of officials in a raid on Upakit’s house in Nakhon Chaisri Road area of Dusit district of Bangkok today and seized his assets, earlier declared to the National Anti-Corruption Commission, including luxury sedans and real estate such as parcels of land and houses in Nakhon Pathom, Rayong and the capital, among other valuables.

Meanwhile, the ONCB is currently taking steps to seize a combined 600 million baht in allegedly laundered money earlier transferred overseas by the scandal-riddled senator who is faced with drug trafficking and money laundering charges, according to the acting ONCB chief.

The drug-busting agency is currently coordinating with the Office of the Attorney-General for international procedures to confiscate the sum of 600 million baht worth of the senator’s allegedly laundered money, Panurat said.

Upakit had been allegedly connected with a Myanmar arms dealing/drugs trafficking suspect who had opened a casino and a hotel in Myanmar’s Shan State and was earlier arrested by the Myanmar authorities.

The ONCB has earlier impounded three million baht in cash owned by the senator in addition to the 409 million baht worth of his property.

Upakit has been accused of involvement in the drug trafficking across the Thai-Myanmar border and the laundering of the ill-gained money, part of which had been allegedly used to buy a costly building in Soi Ari area of Bangkok to provide for the Ruam Thai Sang Chart to rent it as the party’s headquarters.

However, the senator has categorically dismissed all drug trafficking and money laundering charges and dared the authorities to prove him guilty as alleged.
