THE Election Commission ramped up security measures this evening (Sep. 24) to head off any trouble when former leader of People’s Alliance for Democracy, aka “Yellow Shirts”, Sondhi Limthongkul and his supporters arrive tomorrow to submit a formal complaint, Amarin TV said.
The polling agency office coordinated with Dhanarak Asset Development Co.,Ltd. to implement security and maintain order while having also asked for a police company to handle the arrival of the demonstrators due to show up anytime from 10 a.m. to noon.
Metal barriers have been placed to cordon off the area around Building B at the Chaeng Watthana Government Complex while allowing civil servants, staff, and members of the public conducting business at this building to enter. Security is particularly tight at Gate 1, the entrance right in front of the Election Commission office.
Sondhi, who recently launched a new political movement under the concept of “Taking Back our Thailand”, and his supporters intend to submit a letter accusing the election commissioners of failing to perform their duties in accordance with the Constitution.
This follows a resolution to treat 2024’s senatorial electoral irregularities as individual, non-mutually connected phenomena and only prosecute 77 out of the total 229 suspects, including 26 little-known senators, whilst allegedly keeping Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, de facto Bhumjaithai boss Newin Chidchob and the other eminent elements of this camp intact from prosecution in the Supreme Court.
The People’s Party also plans to file a lawsuit to the National Anti-Corruption Commission against the Election Commission on misconduct and duty-negligence charges over alleged senatorial rigging plot tomorrow.
The police company has already secured the area with a monitoring centre set up to track the situation in the vicinity. Officers will only permit protest leaders to enter the inner area to submit their letter. A designated area in the garden in front of Building B has been allocated for speeches and activities by supporters with entry into the building itself barred.
Members of the media wishing to cover the event have been told to register in advance and collect press passes from 7.00 a.m. onwards with Meeting Room 201 prepared to accommodate them.
