SURAT THANI police last night (Apr. 28) found a big lot of 220 kilogrammes of crystal methamphetamine (Ice) hidden in a pickup truck loaded with cabbage after it flipped over and are now chasing the driver and accompanying passenger who fled the scene, Matichon newspaper said this morning.
Tha Chana police station was alerted of the accident at kilometre 41 of Asian Highway and duty officer Pol. Sub.-Lt. Jaturong Suksrimuang quickly went to check. Upon arriving he found that the Songkhla-registered white pickup truck full of bags of cabbage had flipped over on the passenger side but the driver was not around nor did anyone get injured.
Eyewitnesses told him that the driver and accompanying passenger got flustered after the accident and hitched a ride on a six-wheel truck of unknown registration number and escaped down Asian Highway.
Additional policemen went in to help search the pickup truck and found nine sacks beneath piles of the vegetable with each holding 20-25 green bags. Within each of them was one kilogramme rectangular compressed Ice bar with the total of 220 bags of the category 1 drug found being worth 220 million baht. Each green bag was stamped with Guanyinwang refined Chinese tea.
Forensic experts were called in to lift fingerprints and find other evidence.
Police believe this big lot of Ice was transported from a neighbouring country in the North with the destination being a big agent in the lower Southern region. The Ice was then either to be distributed for sale across the southernmost provinces or to be exported to a neighbouring country.
