DE FACTO PHEU THAI boss Thaksin Shinawatra said today (May 25) he is already too old to fight back against any of his political opponents who may look to put an end to current rule by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin and the Pheu Thai-led government.
The 74-year-old Thaksin told reporters during today’s visit to Nakhon Ratchasima that he would definitely not retaliate against those who may have turned hostile toward the Pheu Thai-attached prime minister or himself because, he said, he is now too old to take revenge.
The de facto Pheu Thai boss was responding to criticism that he was looking to fight back against those political opponents, especially the 40 senators who had recently filed an impeachment bid to the Constitutional Court against the prime minister.
“I am too old to fight back. Just let it be to each their own,” the billionaire, politically powerful Thaksin said without elaborating.
Without naming names, Thaksin said he knew exactly who those senators were working for but, he said, their moves could not put an end to Srettha’s elected premiership or the Pheu Thai-led government.
Those senior lawmakers who had launched the surprise move against the Pheu Thai-attached prime minister were alleged of being personally loyal to Palang Pracharath leader Prawit Wongsuwan.
Thaksin declined to either confirm or deny speculation that he might probably engage in a hush-hush talk to bargain or compromise powers with those who may have stood behind the senators’ impeachment bid.
The deposed prime minister advised his current successor to not be overly concerned about the legal battle as long as he has done “the right thing” and could come up with an affidavit to defend himself in court.
Srettha, quietly pushed to power by Thaksin’s sister/deposed prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra, has been accused by the senators of perpetrating a severe breach to the constitution and code of political ethics by naming Pichit Chuenban, a former lawyer for the de facto Pheu Thai boss, as minister in last month’s cabinet lineup.
Though Pichit had called it quits under pressure, the prime minister is yet held allegedly accountable for naming the “starkly corrupt” former lawyer as the portfolioless minister.
The Constitutional Court has barely spared an order to otherwise immediately suspend Srettha from performing as head of government pending a court ruling on the case speculated in the next few months.
