A BRITISH MAN died and many other passengers got injured after a Singapore Airlines airplane they were travelling in from London to Singapore had to make an emergency landing at Suvarnabhumi Airport after running into a severe turbulence, Amarin TV said this evening (May 21).
At 7.40 p.m. Mr. Kittiphong Kittikachorn, Suvarnabhumi Airport’s general manager, said the Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, flight SQ321, was flying through Thai airspace when the pilot asked to make an emergency landing and did so by 3.50 p.m.
The airport followed its emergency plan after speaking to the pilot who said passengers had been injured and quickly sent doctors to the aircraft to check the situation. Upon seeing many passengers had been hurt all were quickly evacuated.
It was confirmed that a British man, 73, had died with the cause initially believed to be a heart attack but a detailed autopsy will be performed to ascertain this.
Seven passengers were critically injured and 23 moderately so, in addition nine crew members were moderately injured and 16 slightly so. Fourteen were waiting in the lounge while all other injured passengers and crew were taken to Samitivej Hospital.
Another airplane is flying here from Changi Airport and expected to land at 9.45 to 10 p.m. to take around 200 passengers to Singapore.
The Civil Aviation Authority will be questioning the pilot about the cause of the emergency landing but they have already ascertained that the plane had fallen into an air pocket then encountered severe turbulence.
