POLICE have found a knife and blood stains in the Koh Phangan hotel room of a Spanish man who is a suspect in the murder and dismemberment of a Colombian anesthesiologist whose body parts were found at a garbage dump on the island, Naewna newspaper said this evening (Aug. 4).
National Police Chief Pol. Gen. Damrongsak Kittipraphat had ordered Deputy National Police Chief Pol. Lt. Gen. Surachate Hakparn, whose nickname is Big Joke, and the head of Police Region 8 Pol.Lt.Gen.Surapong Thanomjit to quickly solve this case because the grisly murder had shaken both local people and tourists.
They have questioned a suspect, Mr. Daniel (surname withheld), 29, from Spain as he was the one who reported to Koh Phangan police that his friend, Mr. Edwin (surname withheld), 44, from Colombia was missing.
Police said their investigation revealed that the suspect had bought an eight-inch chopping knife, a pair of rubber gloves, a sponge, a stainless steel scrubber, detergent and large garbage bags from a convenience store on Tuesday evening (Aug. 1).
Investigation also showed that Edwin had booked a room at a Koh Phangan hotel from July 31 to Aug. 3. Daneil had arrived and checked in before Edwin did so.
Police said the suspect told them that he had gone to meet Edwin at Koh Phangan pier on Wednesday (Aug. 2) after which they had a meal and walked around Haad Rin beach near the hotel. At around midnight that night Daniel reported to police that Edwin had disappeared and could not be reached.
The next day, Thursday (Aug. 3) a human pelvic bone with male genitalia was found in a garbage bag with the price tag attached at a rubbish dump. At 9 a.m. today two parts of a human right leg were found at this same dump.
Police said Daniel had arrived on the island on July 31 and moved into the hotel room Edwin had booked. However the next day he took another room at a different hotel on Haad Salad beach.
When Edwin arrived on Aug. 2, Daniel took him to the room he had rented and not the room Edwin had booked. He also took him to eat at a restaurant near this hotel but after that night Edwin was not seen again.
When police examined the hotel room Daniel took Edwin to stay they found that while the refrigerator, bathroom and sink had been cleaned, the sewer was blood-stained with some tissue, fat and hair also recovered from this pipeline.
Police investigators are continuing to gather evidence in this case.
They added that the two men had often travelled overseas together and believe that a problem arose in their alleged homosexual relationship.
As they see a threat to the society, Surat Thani immigration police was asked to revoke his visa as they proceed with the next steps.
