Chadchart oversees tidying of cables on Charoen Krung road

BANGKOK Governor Chadchart Sittipunt and his team today (June 26) followed up on the progress of tidying messy overhead communication cables on Charoen Krung road with it to take about a month to finish the task across the four-kilometre stretch of this road, Matichon newspaper said.

In inspecting the cleanup in front of Robinson Department Store on this road, Chadchart pointed out that the messy and snarled overhead cables are not electric lines but those of telecom service providers.

While burying these cables underground is costly, the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) plans to do so for a distance of 230 km out of Bangkok’s over 2,000 km stretch, starting with its own cables followed by communication lines.

Cutting dead cables and tidying them is much cheaper and a lot faster but the Bangkok Metropolitan Authority (BMA) cannot handle the task on its own with with National Broadcasting and Telecommunication Commission (NBTC) being in charge of running communication lines that belong to various telecom operators while the poles belong to MEA.

Mr. Witsanu Subsompol, the deputy governor, said MEA is helping out by requiring telecom operators to register new lines they are running with the agency so that it is known which company they belong to instead of allowing them to do so freely as in the past.

After the cables are cleaned up across the four kilometres of Charoen Krung road, which will take around a month, the crew will move to Sala Daeng, Convent road and Soi Phiphat area.

At the sametime the tidying of cables in front of Sukhumvit soi 13 will be completed next month after which the work will proceed to Sukhumvit sois 11, 15, 17, 19 and 36.

Chadchart also added that this work might proceed a little slowly the first year because of the coordination with various parties involved but MEA does intend to complete cleaning up these cables across 450 km of the city within this year.
