FOLLOWING an assault in front of Thonglor police station this afternoon (Sep. 4) former election commissioner Mr. Somchai Srisutthiyakorn has filed a police report on three counts against Mr. Nattawut Wongniem, a former lawyer and adviser to Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Suchart Chomklin, with the whole incident witnessed by police officers and Thai media, PPTVHD36 said.
Just as Somchai arrived at the police station on his bicycle to file a complaint against Nattawut at 1 p.m. he found the latter standing there. He greeted him but the latter started verbally abusing him.
Nattawut then pushed his bicycle, causing it to fall over, resulting in him lying face up on the ground. He thought the other party would stop, but instead, he continued to verbally abuse him while also pointing his finger at him, which he felt was intimidating.
The incident was filmed by the station’s surveillance camera with at least four news outlets also recording the entire assault.
Following the assault in which he suffered two abrasions on his legs, Somchai mentioned that Nattawut is currently a suspect, arrested by police for the offences committed in broad daylight and has undergone fingerprinting, photography, and criminal record-keeping. He and his lawyer, Mr. Noraset Nanongtoom, have opposed bail due to the audacious nature of the actions, which occurred in a government office in broad daylight, in front of police officers. If released on bail, there are concerns that he may lose control and harm others too.
Somchai affirmed that this case will definitely proceed to court and rejected all attempts at mediation, regardless of who, whether politician or anyone else, tries to facilitate it. He challenged anyone attempting to mediate to reveal their identity so that it would be known who is behind it.
Somchai observed that the reason Nattawut targeted him likely stemmed from his public disclosure of factual information about his past, particularly his frequent claims of resigning from government service when in reality he was dismissed. By speaking the truth, he was perceived as being a problem for him.
His lawyer Noraset said that in addition to the assault case, he has also filed a complaint against Nattawut for filing a false police report accusing another person of a crime. This stems from Nattawut previously filing a complaint accusing Somchai’s foundation of fraud and money laundering, with himself also being one of the accused.
Therefore, he filed a countersuit for filing a false report. Furthermore, Nattawut made threatening remarks, such as, “I know your house is near the Indonesian Embassy, we’ll see each other soon,” which caused the victim to be concerned about his safety.
