REPAIRS of the under-construction Southern Purple Line subway tunnel at Wong Wian Yai roundabout which got flooded on Thursday (July 9), and also led to some sections of Prachathipok road subsiding, are expected to be completed in 12 days’ time with this road remaining closed for the duration, TV Channel 7 and PPTVHD36 said today (July 12),
The timeline was confirmed this morning after Bangkok Governor Chatchart Sittipunt followed up on the progress of the repairs with the crew also informing him that the water flowing into the tunnel has decreased from 50 to 20 cubic metres an hour.
The overall situation remains stable, with no additional cracks found on the road, while latest measurements showed no further subsidence. Although there was a storm in the area, the rainfall was not heavy, so it did not affect the work plan, which is proceeding normally.
Deputy Transport Minister Siripong Angkasakulkiat, who is also monitoring the progress of the repairs daily, believes that the 12-day timeframe is achievable because both the road surface and buildings have stopped subsiding. Closing traffic to reduce the weight and vibrations will further speed up the repairs.
This means that tomorrow, the first day of the new week, Bangkok residents, especially those driving towards Thonburi, will face heavy traffic congestion. However signs have been put up directing the traffic to Lad Ya road, which will have two lanes open,while some traffic lights have been switched off with this expected to help alleviate the situation to some extent.
Regarding care of those affected, most have moved to hotels or private accommodations, with the contractor covering all expenses. However, as of this morning, it was found that seven residents have not yet evacuated their buildings, so officials have been instructed to closely monitor and care for them.
