Thaksin gets nod for parole, being freed on May 11

THE Ministry of Justice’s Parole Board today (April 29) approved parole for de facto Pheu Thai boss/inmate Thaksin Shinawatra who will now be released on May 11 without having to wear an EM bracelet, Naewna newspaper said.

The meeting, chaired by  Ms. Tharininee Saengsawat, the ministry’s deputy permanent secretary, with representatives from various agencies participating, approved a list of inmates nationwide eligible for parole under a general programme with the most prominent being Thaksin, currently incarcerated at Klong Prem Central Prison.

He has been behind bars from September 9, 2025, and up to today this adds up to seven months and 20 days, leaving only 12 days remaining for him to complete two-thirds of his one-year sentence thus granted parole on May 11.

This meeting lasted over three hours with the committee deciding that Thaksin qualifies for a general conditional release without having to wear an EM bracelet due to his age, over 70 years old, and pre-existing medical conditions.

The resolution will be passed on to Klong Prem Central Prison commander and probation officers and after his release on May 11 Thaksin will begin a four-month probation period.
