Many hurt as Thai, Chinese construction workers clash in Rayong

A VIOLENT clash broke out between Thai and Chinese workers at a construction site in Nikhom Pattana district, Rayong province, leaving several injured on both sides with an Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC) team rushing there to investigate, Amarin TV said this afternoon (April 27).

At 10.30 a.m. yesterday a heated argument turned into a fierce brawl amid screams and blaring of truck horns in an attempt to quell the disturbance.

A mobile phone clip of the chaos showed workers wearing reflective vests and helmets not just punching each other but also using nearby construction tools to bash one another.

The scuffle occurred in the motorcycle parking area beside some large trucks. Despite some colleagues having intervened, the altercation escalated into violence resulting in several workers on both sides suffering minor injuries.

Sources at the scene said the fight did not stem from personal issues among the workers but rather accumulation of conflicts between Thai and Chinese site managers. The two of them disagreed on coordination and work philosophies, culminating in this confrontation.

Upon hearing of the clash, the Rayong Provincial Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC) sent a team from its Information Gathering and Investigation Unit to this construction site to investigate, question eyewitnesses and those involved in the fight plus go through CCTV footage. This is to proceed according to the law and introduce measures to prevent future clashes as this damages relationships and harms the industry’s image.

It appears the fight may have occurred over a misunderstanding and miscommunication with details still being investigated.

This incident highlights the importance of “cross-cultural communication” within an organisation. If supervisors cannot compromise, their subordinates may suffer as seen from this clash.
