THE PEOPLE’S today (Sep.14) resolved to press a criminal lawsuit against the election commissioners on charges of perpetrating misconduct and neglecting their duties by failing to prosecute any Bhumjaithai suspects in the Supreme Court pertaining to senatorial rigging scandals and take steps to finally bring to justice all suspects found “not guilty” by the allegedly politically-steered commissioners.
Besides, the People’s will launch a censure motion sooner or later against the Bhumjaithai-led government and push for constitution amendment to put an end to excessive powers of the senators most of whom were allegedly influenced by the largest ruling party.
The People’s leader Nattapong Ruengpanyawut confirmed his largest opposition camp will certainly file the criminal lawsuit in court against those commissioners who have resolved to not press charges against any of the Bhumjaithai partisan figures who had remained among a total of 229 suspects in the 2024 electoral rigging conspiracy. Four of the seven commissioners were handpicked by an overwhelming, pro-Bhumjaithai majority of senators.
Those allegedly involved in the vote-buying, bloc-vote fraud over the complicated senatorial races include Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, who concurrently acts as leader of the Bhumjaithai, core of the current coalition government, and de facto Bhumjaithai boss Newin Chidchob, among nearly a couple of dozens of the largest ruling party’s members of cabinet, lawmakers and executive board members, all of whom were spared a relevant lawsuit by the commissioners.
Nattapong said the People’s will not only take legal action in court against the commissioners on misconduct, duty-negligence charges which could possibly land them terms in prison since they decided to keep those Bhumjaithai suspects intact from litigation in the Supreme Court pertaining to their alleged, illegitimate involvement in the electoral rigging conspiracy but take steps to bring all the yet-unlitigated suspects to the Supreme Court.
Besides, the People’s leader said the largest opposition camp will launch censure debate with a subsequent, no-confidence vote against the Bhumjaithai prime minister and his partisan colleagues in cabinet in regard to their alleged involvement in the senatorial rigging conspiracy, among other issues of alleged corruption and non-transparency.
Importantly, he said, the People’s will propose amendment to the coup junta-designed constitution to the extent that the senators be no longer legally empowered to name members of any “independent” agencies such as those of the National Anti-Corruption Commission, judges of the Constitutional Court and election commissioners, among others.
He made his comments following the commissioners’ disputable resolution to rule all the Bhumjaithai suspects “not guilty” of the senatorial rigging scandals whilst ruling otherwise 77 other suspects including 26 senators, thus subject to prosecution in the Supreme Court. As many as 138 out of the total 200 senators had been so suspected by government critics.
