THE Iranian embassy in Bangkok today (March 24) posted a Facebook message saying a Thai ship has been allowed to pass through the Strait of Hormuz with Thai Foreign Affairs Minister Sihasak Phuangketkaew saying this ship belongs to Bangkchak Corp. Plc with another one still stranded there owned by SCG Chemicals Plc, Naewna newspaper said this evening.
In its message the Iranian embassy said, “We would like to inform the Thai people that, thanks to the close cooperation between our two countries and the Sultanate of Oman, a Thai ship peacefully passed through the Strait of Hormuz. We value our friendship and will not forget our comrades.”
Sihasak said he discussed two issues with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi over the phone with one being rescuing Thai cargo ship Mayuree Naree which was attacked on March 11 and is adrift in Iranian waters after Oman having helped rescue 20 crew members while the fate of three others is unknown.
The Iranian Ambassador Nassereddin Heidari called the ministry today to inform that his country together with Oman had launched a joint operation and had now gained access to Mayuree Naree and reached the three crew members.
However Sihasak said his ministry is still verifying whether they are alive.
The Thai Foreign Minister added that the second issue he raised with his Iranian counterpart was for his country to ensure safe passage of Thai ships through the Strait of Hormuz because Thailand is not a party to the conflict and international law regarding safe navigation applies to ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
“We received news that the Bangchak ship safely passed through the Strait of Hormuz yesterday and is now heading for Thailand. We hope that the other Thai ship will also return to Thailand safely,” he said.
