AMIDST anger over the demolition of a statue of Hindu god Vishnu at Chong An Ma border crossing in Ubon Ratchathani on Monday (Dec. 22) after the Thai army reclaimed the area, the Army Military Force Facebook page mentioned that Cambodians too had in the past burnt a statue of Chinese goddess Guanyin, Amarin TV said this afternoon (Dec. 25).
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Wednesday (Dec. 24) reacted to the demolition of a statue of Lord Vishnu at the Thailand-Cambodia border, saying “such disrespectful acts hurt the sentiments of followers around the world” while Cambodian netizens voiced their anger at the Thai army’s action online.
In Chinese mythology, Guanyin is the goddess of mercy and considered to be the physical embodiment of compassion. She is an all-seeing, all-hearing being who is called upon by worshipers in times of uncertainty, despair, and fear.
A caption for images of Cambodians burning the Guanyin statue said: “What are the Cambodians so upset about? They themselves previously burned down a Guanyin shrine that Vietnamese citizens had secretly built on Koh Kong Island.”
