Anutin to make a quick trip to KL to sign Thai-Khmer peace pact

ALTHOUGH Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has cancelled his flight to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, today (Oct. 25) to attend the 47th Asean Summit as the nation mourns the passing of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit the Queen Mother, he will make it there for the signing of the Thai-Cambodian peace agreement to be witnessed by US President Donald Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim tomorrow, Thai Rath newspaper said.

However Anutin has requested that the signing ceremony be shortened so that he could return in time to attend a royal ceremony for Her Majesty Queen Sirikit the Queen Mother the same day.

Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow will be attending the remaining meetings during the Oct. 25-28 Asean summit.

Anutin also reassured the public that all relevant agencies, including Defence, Foreign and Interior ministries, have been engaged in negotiating with Cambodia at both the Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) and General Border Committee (GBC) meetings. This has resulted in a set of conditions for Cambodia to implement. Once the neighbouring country has implemented these conditions, Thailand will consider whether threats to national security have been eliminated, and then proceed according to diplomatic protocol.

There is therefore no need to be concerned that this agreement will result in a disadvantage for Thailand or loss of sovereignty.

When asked about the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) summit in South Korea from Oct. 29 to Nov. 1, 2025, Anutin said he had requested a Cabinet resolution that if there are no critical issues requiring discussions with other leaders, the Foreign Minister would attend on his behalf as it is his intention to stay in the country.
