SIX districts of Ayutthaya are now badly flooded after Chao Phraya Dam’s water discharge rate rose to 2,000 cubic metres per second for the fourth consecutive day causing the water level in both Chao Phraya and Noi rivers to rise continuously, Amarin TV said.
The provincial Disaster Relief Office said 88 subdistricts, 535 villages and a total of 22,893 households are inundated with the flooding having spread widely in many areas affecting numerous homes, schools and temples.
This TV station’s reporters visited Hua Wiang subdistrict, Sena district, and found that at Wat Bandai Chang the floodwater had reached 60 to 70 centimetres around the ubosot (ordination hall) but fortunately had not yet surged within with the principal Buddha image undamaged.
However a meditation centre built in a low-lying area was nearly completely submerged in water.
Furthermore, many houses along the banks of the Noi river were severely flooded, forcing residents to travel by boat instead of using roads.
The Royal Irrigation Department recently announced that it has gradually opened several floodgates in Bang Ban and Phak Hai districts to divert water to fields, thus reducing the water level in the Chao Phraya and Noi rivers, hoping to mitigate the impact on urban communities and key economic areas of the province.
