MYANMAR troops rounded up 777 online scammers, including Chinese and Thai nationals plus citizens of their own country while clashing with Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) across from Thailand’s Tak province, Amarin TV said today (July 29).
Myanmar officials in Myawaddy township, Kayin state, opposite Mae Sot district on the Thai side, said Myanmar authorities, specifically soldiers from the 22nd Light Infantry Division which is fighting against KNLA, had last Saturday (July 25) arrested this group of scammers.
They consist of 620 Chinese men, 11 Chinese women, 3 Thai women, 32 Myanmar men, and 111 Myanmar women. The soldiers also seized items used in the cybercrime including 85 computers, 183 mobile phones, and one Starlink satellite internet device.
All the foreign nationals have been detained at Hpa-An, Kayin state’s capital city. Legal proceedings will be initiated against all members of this criminal gang after investigation is complete.
The officials added that during the operation there were clashes with several armed groups, which they said were protecting the call centre gang. Authorities also seized firearms, ammunition, concrete bunkers, and a quantity of other military equipment.
Myanmar media has begun reporting the success of this operation after the government issued a statement at the national capital city Naypyidaw.
