A HEAVY clash that lingered for two days in Songkhla ended today (Sep. 13) with two insurgents being killed, one of whom is suspected of being involved in a train bombing, Naewna said this afternoon (Sep. 13).
The intermittent firefight between the troops and insurgents took place at a hillside in Ban Huai Tao, Khuha subdistrict, Saba Yoi district, from last Thursday (Sep. 11).
Soldiers had cordoned off the area after insurgents opened fire during an operation. Community and religious leaders negotiated with the insurgents to surrender but as they were unsuccessful, intermittent exchange of gunfire continued for two days.
One of the two insurgents killed was identified as Mr. Romulee (surname withheld) with a background check revealing possible involvement in a bombing of Hat Yai-Padang Besar railway line.
After officials completed the autopsy in keeping with legal requirements, the families of the deceased insurgents took their bodies for a funeral at a local cemetery with there being eulogies praising them during the funeral procession.
As the authorities have taken control of the area where fighting took place, they are now investigating and gathering additional evidence.
