THAILAND’S National Security Council is exploring avenues to file lawsuits against Cambodia at an international court for violence along the Thai-Cambodian border, Naewna newspaper said today (Aug. 6).
Foreign Affairs Minister Maris Sangiampongsa said this morning that while the government is preparing to file civil and criminal lawsuits against Cambodia, he does not yet know which court the cases will go to as he is still studying the matter but they will definitely be filed at international level.
A National Security Council meeting chaired by Acting Prime Minister-cum-Interior Minister Phumtham Wechayachai is scheduled to take place at 4 p.m. today to look at the information from the Thai-Cambodian General Border Committee (GBC) meeting taking place in Malaysia during Aug. 4-7, with observers from Malaysia, US and China present, to work out the guideline for the meeting of the two countries’ defence ministers tomorrow.
A security source said legal issues are currently being compiled to file lawsuits against Cambodia with there being an avenue to do so at international level. Even so, it has to be carefully considered whether pursuing the legal action would bind Thailand to the jurisdiction of the International Court of Justice.
