2 more new anti-personnel mines found near blast site

THE army has found two more new anti-personnel mines close to the spot at Chong Bok, Ubon Ratchathani province, where three soldiers got injured in a recent landmine explosion and is asking other countries to condemn Cambodia, Amarin TV said today (July 21).

Maj. Gen. Winthai Suvari, the army spokesman, said yesterday a team from Suranaree Task Force and the 3rd Humanitarian Mine Action Unit went to again inspect the spot where the three soldiers had got injured on July 16 after one of them stepped on a landmine.

In doing so they found two new PMN2 anti-personnel mines just 30 centimetres from the original crater. Both have been carefully removed.

Laying landmines is a clear violation of Thailand’s sovereignty and shows an intention to attack Thai military personnel. It is also in violation of the the Ottawa Mine Ban Treaty, which both Thailand and Cambodia have ratified.

The army is now going to ask Asean members and other countries to condemn Cambodia’s very inappropriate actions with the neighbouring country’s military attaché having been invited to acknowledge the facts of this incident tomorrow.
