Cambodians perform ritual cursing ceremony at border temple

AT ONE of the three disputed border temples two Cambodians performed a ritual cursing ceremony to the shock of Thai tourists there, Amarin TV said tonight (July 20).

When a Cambodian woman performing this ritual at Prasat Ta Kwai uttered the curse, “May all Thais die” it led to some Thais being stunned, others confused and a few angry but no one dared to respond because they were at an ancient structure with many tourists from both countries visiting.

Not long after, a Cambodian man came there and sprayed something to drive away “bad things, evil spirits” from the ancient temple which seemed to be a ritual to chase out the owner of the house from his own home.

After that two children, who are known to be the children of Cambodian soldiers, came to collect money tourists had offered at a Shiva Linga, a representation of the Hindu god Shiva, as they do every day. When Thai officials try to stop them, some Cambodian adults usually shout and threaten them.

These Thai officials do not dare to do anything to the children in case it becomes an international issue that Thais bully Cambodian children.

“It’s clearly a psychological game,” said a stressed out Thai tourist.

Earlier today the Thai Foreign Ministry condemned in the strongest terms the use of anti-personnel mines in the border area by Cambodia with this being a clear violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Thailand.

It is also an outright breach of the principles that are fundamental to international law and enshrined in the United Nations Charter, as well as a clear violation of the obligations under the Anti – Personnel Mine Ban Convention.

Thailand will be taking action in accordance with this convention, while continuing to resolve differences with Cambodia through existing bilateral channels. Thailand called on Cambodia to cooperate on humanitarian demining efforts along the border of the two countries as bilaterally agreed by both Prime Ministers

This followed injury of three Thai soldiers from Thailand’s Infantry Company 6021 after they stepped on a landmine while conducting a routine patrol along an established route within Thai territory.

The Thai Government has since received reports from responsible security agencies that after their subsequent investigations, the evidence collected confirm that the landmines were a type of anti-personnel mine not employed or stockpiled by Thailand and were also recently laid.

Assessments and related evidence discovered by the responsible security agencies point to the conclusion that the laying of these mines was a blatant violation of international law.
