Ministry says JBC meeting proceeding well while leaked chat triggers social media storm

THE FOREIGN Ministry’s spokesperson said the Thai-Cambodian Joint Boundary Committee (JBC) meeting at Phnom Penh today (June 14) proceeded well and is continuing tomorrow while mentioning that he does not know anything about an alleged leaked chat indicating Thailand has discussed accepting Cambodia’s 1:200,000 map, which could lead to losing some territory and was widely criticised on social media, Thai Rath newspaper and TV Channel 7 said.

In the chat allegedly leaked by one of the Thai representatives at the meeting one part of the message mentioned the 1:200,000 map of Cambodia and the person who started the conversation then ended it after saying, “I thought we were trustworthy.”

Mr. Nikorndej Plangoon, the ministry’s spokesperson, said Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa has reported progress of the meeting from time to time and has called a meeting of relevant agencies.

The meeting began with a small discussion with the Thai-Cambodian JBC chairman before a full negotiation started on technical issues and the use of topographic surveying technology. The meeting stretched to the afternoon and will continue tomorrow.

Thailand will not accept the jurisdiction of the International Court of Justice as Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and Foreign Minister Maris have always confirmed, he added.

“I would like to reiterate that the atmosphere of today’s meeting was good. Both parties discussed and exchanged ideas frankly. When the meeting is over, which is expected to be tomorrow, I will brief the media,”  Nikorndej said.

When asked whether the JBC meeting had raised the four dispute areas, Prasat Ta Muen Thom, Prasat Ta Moan Tauch, Prasat Ta Khwai (called Prasat Ta Krabey in Khmer language) and Mombei area, and whether Thailand had mentioned its position on this dispute, the spokesperson said discussions are still ongoing and he did not have details on this matter.

On the alleged leaked LINE message regarding the acceptance of the map, he said he did not know the details and would inform the press when he finds out.
