Sickly woman hangs self after daughter scolds her

A WOMAN suffering from Parkinson’s disease hanged herself after calling her daughter who she missed but was again severely scolded for doing so, Amarin TV said this evening (May 22).

At 2.20 p.m. Pol. Lt. Warinthon Sotawong, deputy chief for investigation at Huai Luang subdistrict police station in Udon Thani, was informed of a woman having hanged herself at a house in this area and went there with a doctor from Udon Thani Hospital to investigate.

Upon arrival they found Ms. Nu, 63, hanging from a tamarin tree next to a fenced single-storey house. Initial autopsy showed no sign of assault and that she died through lack of oxygen around eight to 12 hours ago.

Mr. Uthen, 48, and Ms. Sasikarn, 51, the deceased woman’s son and daughter-in-law, lit incense sticks to ask for forgiveness from their mother’s body for what her children and grandchildren had said that was wrong and inappropriate.

Uthen said his mother had five children, three sons and two daughters, with their father and one son having already passed away and he was the eldest. This morning when he woke up he did not see his mother make Ovaltine to drink so went to look for her and it was only the second time that he found her body hanging from the tamarind tree outside the compound.

She had previously told him she wanted to hang herself but he consoled her pointing out that even though she was suffering from Parkinson’s disease she had no debts.

Sasikarn said two years ago her mother-in-law, who previously took care of one of her daughters’ children, fell sick and this daughter hired a neighbour to take care of them and stopped sending her money.

When her husband found out that she was sick and alone, they decided to take care of her, and from being unable to walk at all she could now do so.

However, she missed her daughter but when she called her, as her daughter did not want to take care of her, she always scolded her for doing so, telling her to not bother her, asking whether she wanted money and if she could not live and wanted to die to just die and not bother her.

“I told her not to talk to her like that … and to come and apologise to her on Songkran Day, but she did not turn up and doesn’t care at all. She has been here for two years now and she never called her.”
