A LIGHTNING strike at Cambodia’s famed Angkor Wat in Siem Reap province killed three persons and injured dozens others during religious rites last evening (May 16) but no Thai tourists were at the complex, Amarin TV said this morning.
A local security agency said the three persons who died and most of those who got injured were Cambodians. However there has been no confirmation of the casualties.
The tragedy occurred while Cambodians were performing religious rites at the temple at around 5 p.m. while it was raining.
It is possible that this temple complex either does not have lightning conductors or what has been installed is not sufficient.
However most Cambodians said on social media that this news should not be published to not alarm tourists and dent Cambodia’s image.
