PROMINENT activist lawyer Anon Nampha was today (Dec. 19) sentenced to two years and eight months in jail for violating Section 112 of the Criminal Code, also known as the lese majeste law, Section 116, or the sedition law, the Communicable Disease Act, the Emergency Decree and the Advertising Control Act over a speech he gave on Aug. 3, 2020 at a rally entitled “Casting a Spell to Protect Democracy” or the Harry Potter demonstration, Naewna newspaper said.
In the six Section 112 cases he has been sentenced so far he has been given a total of 18 years, 10 months, and 20 days in jail.
The prosecutor said that during Aug. 1-3, 2020 the defendant had run a message on his personal Facebook page inviting people to join a rally at the Democracy Monument under the topic, “Reforming the Monarchy from the Perspective of a Lawyer”.
This rally drew around a hundred people and the defendant gave a speech about the monarchy which led to the lese majeste charges,
When Anon was brought to the court from prison approximately 60 lawyers and supporters were there to encourage him filling the courtroom,
Mr. Kritsadang Nutcharas, his lawyer, said Anon’s speech is a single offense but violated multiple laws. He was sentenced to four years in jail but as his testimony was somewhat useful, this was reduced by one-third to two years and eight months,
While being taken to be detained at the ground floor of the court Anon thanked those who came to give him support.
