MANY shopkeepers at a Rayang market cheated by scammers who buy lots of products and then show fake QR code payment slips on their mobile phones warned others to be careful, TV Channel 7 said today (Dec. 10).
CCTV cameras inside P. Charoenphan shop at Ban Phe market in Rayong city filmed a male scammer, around 30 years old, who came in to buy products while Ms. Jaeb, 60, was the only one there.
These scammers usually hit shops when there are not many customers around and pick up a lot of things to purchase with this being this scammer’s strategy too.
When it came to payment he used his mobile phone to pretend to scan the shop’s QR code to do so and instead showed Ms. Jaeb a fake cash transfer slip. As her eyesight is weak she was cheated twice in this manner by tricksters, the first time on Dec. 5 then again the next day, and lost over 10,000 baht.
Owners of many other shops at this market said they too had been similarly scammed losing tens of thousands of baht in merchandise to swindlers. Sometimes they pretend to have transferred more money than needed to pay for the goods and ask for the change which they then often use to fill petrol.
The shopkeepers have posted surveillance camera clips of the scammers online and filed a complaint with the police to track them down.
