THE driver of the ex-wife of Dr. Boon Vanasin, 86, who is on the run from charges of defrauding investors said at noon today (Nov. 24) when he brought food for her and their daughter who are being detained and questioned at Phaya Thai police station that the two of them lived in the same house, Thai Rath newspaper and Amarin TV said.
The driver, Mr. Phan (surname withheld), said he had worked for this family for five years and had only brought rice and stir-fried basil plus 2 small bottles of water for Dr. Boon’s ex-wife Mrs. Charuwan Vanasin, 79, and their daughter Ms. Nalin Vanasin, 51. He had not brought any medicine or documents and did not know if Charuwan suffered from chronic illness.
Phan added that as Dr. Boon and Charuwan lived in the same house he last saw the former in June or July and that he did know that he had travelled abroad but he did not go overseas very often.
Asked if Dr. Boon told him to drive to various projects for which investment was raised, Phan said he had never driven to any of them.
Charuwan and Nalin had turned themselves in yesterday claiming that their signatures were forged to guarantee loans Dr. Boon took. Charuwan’s lawyer said they will be pressing charges against Dr. Boon for forging their signatures.
Pol. Maj. Gen. Atthaphon Wongsiriprida, commander of Metropolitan Police Bureau 1, said police had finished questioning Nalin and initially she still denied all the charges.
Charuwan will be questioned further because she had asked to take a break from questioning several times last night to take medicine for her chronic illness.
Charuwan had told police that her ex-husband is currently in China and the International Affairs Division is working on requesting the Interpol to issue a red notice for his arrest.
So far 247 victims who suffered total losses of 7.6 billion baht had filed complaints with the Metropolitan Police but there are victims in other areas who had also similarly filed complaints. A meeting with the commanding officer is being held on how to accept complaints and total up the number of victims.
However as for now victims can still file complaints at the police station in their residential area.
Most of the offenses against Dr. Boon come under the Cheque Act with the majority of the victims being businessmen in the medical sector who got taken in by Dr. Boon and some brokers that they were raising funds for five medical projects. These include a cancer centre in the Pinklao area, a wellness centre in Rama 3 area, three hospitals in Laos, a joint investment in a hospital in Vietnam and an IT business project.
The suspects invited a large number of investors to sign loan contracts lending money for these projects with cheques being issued to pay off the principal and interest in advance.
Initially the interest was paid but later this stopped with the cheques bouncing at the banks.
