New mass of water gushing down Mekong river from China

AMID flooding of provinces along Mekong river a warning has been issued that a new wave of water will be flowing down from China through Xayaburi Dam in Laos and reaching Thailand either tonight or in a day or two, TV Channel 7 said this afternoon (Aug. 15).

Although flooding at Chiang Khan district of Loei province has stabilised with floodwaters continuing to decrease, this new wave of water could trigger a new round of flooding.

After reaching Chiang Khan, the new mass of water will flow to Si Chiang Mai and Sangkhom districts of Nong Khai province.

Meanwhile floodwaters from the overflowing Mekong river have been rising in Pak Khat district of Bueng Kan province with villagers saying they have not faced this severe flooding for three to four years now, Amarin TV said.

A news team of this TV station surveyed the Mekong river flowing along this district and found that it has risen by more than 30cm overnight.

In addition the Mekong is flowing strongly again today carrying logs and roots along with it.

Soldiers, policemen and provincial officials placed sandbags in front of some houses to prevent them from being flooded.

Ms Rampei Wisesdee, 50, who manages a resort in this province told the TV news team that although floodwaters have not yet flowed into the compound she has asked for sandbags to be placed at the entrance to prevent this from happening.

She inspected nearby Naga Plaza and saw that the floodwater level had increased from yesterday.

She added that she has never encountered this high flooding ever since she started managing the resort. In the past the flooding would decrease in three to four days but now it keeps rising.
