Police, FDA bust illegal drug, lip balm factory

METROPOLITAN Police together with Food and Drug Administration (FDA) officials raided a factory producing counterfeit medicines and lip balm in Thung Khru district of Bangkok with a dead lizard found in a boiling pot, TV Channel 7 and Thai Rath newspaper said today (Sep. 11).

Investigation was launched after FDA discovered that the lot number of a brand of painkiller being sold at a pharmacy matched that of an export consignment.

This led to the raid on a warehouse in Soi Pracha Uthit 76 where police and officials seized 44,000 tablets of Methylphenidate, brand name Ritalin, a central nervous system stimulant; 2,900 unregistered Viagra pills; fake herbal products; a brand of painkiller; lip balm, and 20,000 bottles of illegal formalin among others.

The value of the seized counterfeit drugs is around 30 million baht.

Upon being questioned, the factory owner, only identified as Mr. Somsak, 55, said he did not produce these medicines but bought them to repackage and sell and that he has been doing this business for 10 years.

However police and FDA confirmed that this factory has been falsifying drug production documents with a lot of evidence seized.

Further investigation is now being undertaken.
