VILLAGERS IN LOW-LYING areas of the central region were today (July 25) alerted to brace for the likelihood of flash floods due to torrential rain over the next few days.
Department of Disaster Prevention & Mitigation director-general Chaiwat Junthirapong said heavy downpours were forecast to prevail over the lower northern and upper central provinces from now until the end of this month with the likelihood of flash floods inundating the low-lying areas on both sides of Chao Phraya River and Noi River in the mid-central and lower central provinces.
Given an average of 1,500 cubic metres of torrential rainwater per second flowing above the Chao Phraya dam in Chainart, a range of 800 to 1,100 cubic metres of excessive water is currently released per second from the dam to the plains on both sides of the rivers affecting rice farms, fruit orchards, livestock and residential areas, according to the DDPM chief.
Villagers were strongly advised to relocate their property and livestock to higher ground during an initial period of the current rainy season whilst keeping abreast with official alerts of the latest developments of rainstorms and weather conditions.
The central provinces forecast to be more or less affected by torrential rains and flash floods over the next few days are Uthai Thani, Chainart, Singburi, Angthong, Ayutthaya, Supanburi, Lopburi, Pathum Thani, Nonthaburi, Samut Prakan and Bangkok.
