Get ready for increased rainfall as La Niña roars back

WITH La Niña, the cooler counterpart to the famed El Niño, now making a grand return Thailand faces above-average rainfall from July to September with this continuing till January-March, 2025, TV Channel 7 said this afternoon (July 29).

The Thai Meteorological Department’s Climate Centre said as the southwesterly monsoon covers Thailand from mid-May to mid-October, with this originating from a high pressure zone in southern Indian Ocean, the reemergence of La Niña weather pattern will lead to more rainfall especially along the coast and mountainside.

After the influence of the southwesterly monsoon ends around the middle of October, the northeasterly monsoon will cover Thailand till mid-February next year. This monsoon originates from a high pressure zone in Mongolia and China.

The mean monsoon index also showed that during June southwesterly winds were stronger than expected and will likely reach 850hPa (1,500 metres) over the next four weeks as follows:

– During the first two weeks stronger than normal easterly winds will pass over upper Thailand while faster westerly winds will blow across the South;

– During the third and fourth weeks southerly and southwesterly winds pass through the whole country.

This will result in higher than normal rainfall in July, as compared to the same monthly average during 1991-2020.
