Canadian tourist dies after falling off moving train

A YOUNG CANADIAN man died last night (Mar. 20) after falling off a fast train running from Bangkok to Chumphon then onwards to Trang after going out of the carriage to smoke a cigarette as it was moving up and down during the journey, TV Channel 7 said late afternoon today.

At approximately 10.30 p.m. Ban Pong police station in Ratchaburi province was notified that a foreign man, later identified as Mr.Ralph Ryan Joseph, 26, from Canada, had disappeared after stepping out of the carriage of fast train number 168 to smoke near Ban Kluay Temple, Tha Rap subdistrict, Mueang district. A search was launched but the team was unable to find him.

Today Photharam police station was informed by a Cambodian construction worker, Mr. Makala, 23, that a foreign man’s body was lying beneath the platform at Chet Samian subdistrict and a team quickly rushed there.

Police said the Canadian tourist’s body had a large laceration on his left thigh with scratch marks in other parts of his body and blood splattered nearby as well as hair stuck to a cement bar.

Makala said everyday during his lunch break he comes to rest beneath the platform but today was shocked to see the foreign man’s body there so told his supervisor to call the police.

Police assumed that the tourist had hit the cement bar then managed to pull his leg out but fell again beneath the platform. He was likely trying to seek help but because he had lost a lot of blood he later died.

His body has been sent to the Forensic Institute for an autopsy to determine the cause of death while the Canadian embassy has been informed.
