PHEU THAI LEADER PAETONGTARN Shinawatra today (Mar. 18) met with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet in Phnom Penh as part of a joint effort to promote working relationship between the two Asean countries.
Paetongtarn, daughter of de facto Pheu Thai boss-cum-convict on parole Thaksin Shinawatra, led the ruling Thai party’s executive board members in an informal visit to the Cambodian capital after former Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen had invited her to the neighbouring country during his private meeting with her father in Bangkok last month.
During their informal talks in Phnom Penh, the Cambodian prime minister extended his congratulations for Thaksin’s homecoming after 17 years of self-exile abroad.
The Cambodian prime minister’s father was known as a close friend of the Pheu Thai leader’s father and apparently became the first guest to visit the de facto party boss at the latter’s Chan Song Lah residence a few days after he had been granted parole.
Paetongtarn called on Hun Manet to help promote a regional tourism campaign called Six Countries One Destination, referring to Laos, Vietnam, Myanmar, Malaysia, Cambodia and Thailand.
In particular, Thailand and Cambodia may jointly steer mutual promotion campaigns in areas of joint economic development, bilateral trade, investment, culture and tourism, the Pheu Thai leader was quoted as saying.
Bangkok and Phnom Penh are suggested to promptly negotiate with airline firms for cuts in air fares and increase in flights for tourists to and from either country.
Paetongtarn was quoted as saying the Thai and Cambodian historical and cultural backgrounds have been mutually connected, thus encouraging concerted tourism campaigns between the two countries.
The Cambodian prime minister was quoted as saying he and his Thai counterpart Srettha Thavisin had already met each other on several occasions to discuss issues of bilateral cooperation based on shared interests between the two neighbouring countries.
The Pheu Thai leader alongside her entourage is scheduled to return home tomorrow.
