THE GLOBETROTTING PRIME MINISTER Srettha Thavisin has been given a sum of 139 million baht in government funding at his disposal with which he may travel the world over for the current fiscal year, according to a government official.
The 139 million baht in funding was primarily earmarked for planned expenditure of the Pheu Thai-backed prime minister’s official trips overseas throughout fiscal 2024 for reported purposes of propagating and promoting Thailand’s potentials in international trade, investment and tourism.
Of that total, an estimated 68 million baht in funding for the real estate mogul-turned-prime minister’s official world tours has been contributed by the Board of Investment, an agency attached to the Prime Minister’s Office, said the official attached to Government House who only spoke on condition of anonymity.
Srettha has evidently become Thailand’s most-frequently globetrotting prime minister who has so far officially travelled as many as 15 times to world destinations in a short span of six months.
It is up to anyone’s guess as to how many times he will have done so throughout the executive branch’s four-year term if he ever completes it.
Virtually playing the role of a salesman, Srettha kicked off his world tour campaign with an official journey to New York to attend last September’s United Nations General Assembly for which a sum of 30 million baht in the taxpayer’s money had been spent on his chartered flight.
Over the last six-month period since he took office, the prime minister has so far made official journeys to 15 countries some of which had held international conferences, namely the United States, Cambodia, Hong Kong, China, Brunei, Malaysia, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, Laos, Japan, Switzerland, Sri Lanka, Australia, Germany and France.
