WITH FOUR days of New Year holidays having now passed, as many as 190 people have been killed in 1,570 accidents nationwide while 1,574 got injured and it was Kanchanaburi where the highest number of accidents occurred while Bangkok recorded the most fatalities, Naewna newspaper said today (Jan. 2).
The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Director-General Dr. Thongchai Keeratihatthayakorn said there were 419 accidents, 422 injuries and 62 deaths yesterday, the first day of the New Year.
The main cause of accidents was speeding, 39.14%, followed by drink driving, 30.55%.
It was motorcycles that were involved in most accidents, totalling 86.51%.
Most accidents occurred on straight roads, 85.44%, with 39.86% occurring on highways followed by 33.17% on subdistrict and village roads.
It was between 12.01 a.m. to 1 a.m. that most accidents, 10.26%, happened.
Additionally, most casualties were recorded among people in the 20-29 age group, totalling 17.36%.
Altogether 1,785 main checkpoints have been set up with 51,672 officials manning them.
It was Prachuab Khiri Khan and Songkhla where most accidents took place yesterday, at 15 each, with the former province also having the most injuries, totalling 22. Bangkok with five fatalities topped this list yesterday.
The province with the highest cumulative road accidents over the four-day New Year holidays (Dec. 29, 2023-Jan. 1, 2024) was Kanchanaburi, totalling 57, with this province also having the highest number of cumulative injuries reaching 56 people.
Bangkok had the highest number of cumulative road deaths during these four holidays, adding up to 13, while 19 provinces did not have any fatalities.
