THE CAPTAIN of a speedboat that slammed into some rocks at Maiton island while returning to Phuket from a trip to Phi Phi island yesterday (Dec. 31) with seven Russian tourists and a crewman aboard has been found to have traces of amphetamine in his body, Amarin TV said this evening (Jan. 1).
Pharmacist Somsuk Samphanprathip, Phuket’s deputy public health doctor, said sadly a five-year-old Russian girl injured in this accident had died.
Three other Russians and the captain and his crewman are still hospitalised while the remaining three Russian tourists have been discharged.
Although it was mentioned yesterday that the tourists were Chinese, they are in fact Russians.
A drug test of the captain showed traces of amphetamine in his body but it has still to be confirmed by another test that he had taken this drug, Somsuk said.
The crewman too has undergone a drug test but the result is not out yet, he added.
