Abhisit urged to contest for return as Democrat leader

By Thai Newsroom Reporters

FORMER DEMOCRAT LEADER/FORMER prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has been encouraged to contest for a phenomenal return as leader of today’s second largest opposition party.

Former Democrat MP Thepthai Senapong posted on his Facebook page today (Dec.5) to recommend Abhisit vie for Democrat leader in an extraordinary partisan caucus scheduled for the upcoming Saturday.

Abhisit could eventually run as one of a trio of contenders for Democrat leader alongside former Palang Pracharath MP Watanya “Madam Deer” Bunnag, spouse of Nation Group chair Chai Bunnag, and former Democrat MP Narapat Kaewthong who is known to secure solid support from former Democrat secretary-general/now acting Democrat leader Chalermchai Sri-on and a dozen-plus Democrat MPs.

Thepthai, known as personally close to Abhisit, remarked that the former Democrat leader is unfalteringly opposed to military rule and largely believed to be capable of restoring the Democrat popularity among middle-class and conservative constituents, especially those in Bangkok and the southern region.

Following the 2019 election which dealt another heavy blow to the Democrats, Abhisit resigned as party leader and MP in protest of the naming of Prayut Chan-o-cha as head of a Palang Pracharath-led coalition government as he had earlier publicly pledged during a nationwide electoral campaign to ultimately oppose the former coup leader’s prolonged rule.

However, the former Democrat leader apparently remains non-committal for the time being as to whether he may finally decide to contest the top leadership of the country’s oldest party which has seen a sharp decline in the number of their elected lawmakers.

Today’s 25 Democrat MPs include former party leader/former prime minister Chuan Leekpai and former party leader/former deputy prime minister Jurin Laksanavisit.
