10,000-baht digital wallet reaching people on Feb.1: PM

By Thai Newsroom Reporters

PRIME MINISTER SRETTHA Thavisin said today (Oct.14) a sum of 10,000 baht in digital wallet will be delivered to each of the eligible people on February 1, 2024.

The prime minister reconfirmed that the digital wallet is scheduled to be provided for each and every Thai national aged 16 years or over on February 1, 2024, despite strong objection raised by university economists and other critics.

The Pheu Thai-led government’s populist handout campaign was primarily designed to boost domestic consumption by recipients in rural areas where most of the country’s population are located.

Given the precondition that the recipient of the digital wallet only be allowed to use the government-granted money for purchase of goods or services in a four-kilometre radius of their registered home and nowhere else, the local economy nationwide was designed to substantially grow, according to the prime minister.

The spending money to be circulated nationwide under the Pheu Thai-initiated project could eventually lead to economic development of all villages and local communities, Srettha said.

“A family of three or five members could pool the money to do something with it and become better off. See how much it will be beneficial for the people,” Srettha commented.
